Alvaro Morata endured an evening to forget as he missed an open goal during Spain’s 1-0 friendly win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Sunday. The 26-year-old has been in decent form for Chelsea recently, scoring three times in his last three Premier League appearances but his shooting boots deserted him while playing for his country. Morata was unable to find the net during Spain’s costly 3-2 defeat to Croatia after coming on as a substitute and he passed up a glorious opportunity to score against Bosnia and Herzegovina. With just under an hour played, Spain went on the attack as Marco Asensio’s low drive forced a smart stop from Ibrahim Sehic in goal, with the loose ball dropping kindly to Morata.

It looked easier to score as Morata had the whole goal to aim for, yet he somehow contrived to bobble the ball awkwardly out for a goal kick after miskicking his shot off his right foot and onto his left before falling over. Fortunately for Morata, it didn’t matter in the end as debutant Brais Mendez struck 12 minutes from time to hand Spain a morale-boosting win on the same day that they were pipped to the Nations League semi-finals by England.
