Ben Foakes and Sam Curran led England’s fightback on day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka. The Surrey teammates shared a partnership of 88 as Joe Root’s side recovered from 103-5 to finish the day on 321-8. The tourists’ top order failed to deliver in Galle after Root won the toss and elected to bat, but Foakes (87*) and Curran 48 helped England recover. As expected, Rory Burns was awarded his Test cap before play and opened the batting alongside Keaton Jennings in the first match since Alastair Cook’s retirement.
